Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (HSEE) is a national-level entrance exam organised by IIT Madras every year to select the applicants before offering them admission in the five-year integrated Master of Arts (MA) full-time course taught by the college. The initial two years of the MA curriculum extended at IIT Madras are the corresponding. Nevertheless, after that the course forks into two branches– Integrated MA in Development Studies and Integrated MA in English Studies. The cumulative number of seats on presentation in IIT Madras’s MA course is 52 (each year). The exam takes place in two parts wherein Part A includes multiple-choice questions and Part B includes subjective type questions. The candidates have to secure at least 60% score to qualify HSEE 2020, the qualifying marks for SC/ST/PwD is 55%.

The filling and presenting the application form for HSEE 2020 closed on January 23, 2020. The HSEE 2020 application tracking window is now shut. The window for monitoring the application situation began on February 17, 2020, and the closing date to review the status was March 6, 2020. Applicants who have correctly applied during the application phase can download their respective HSEE admit cards which will be released two weeks before the entrance exam. HSEE Eligibility Guidelines
Age Bar: General category applicants are suitable to apply for HSEE 2020 if they are born on or after October 1, 1995. SC/ST/PwD applicants are given age relaxation of 5 years.
Qualifying Exam: Candidates reach the HSEE 2020 eligibility guidelines if they have completed any of the below-mentioned examinations with certain mentioned marks in 2018 or are appearing for them in 2020:
- The concluding examination of the 10+2 education system, led by a Central or State Board affiliation by the Association of Indian Universities.
- Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination administered by a Board or University acknowledged by the Association of Indian Universities.
- Final examination of the two-year programme of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.
- Senior Secondary School Examination administered by the National Institute of Open Schooling with at least five subjects.
- Any Public School, Board or University examination in India or in a foreign country which is acknowledged as similar to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities.
- HSC vocational exam.
- General Certificate Education (GCE) exam (London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) standard.
- High School Certificate test of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
The official website informs: “Candidates who have finished Class XII (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not designated above should present a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities to the conclusion that the examination they have relinquished is equivalent to the Class XII examination”. It moreover states, “In position, the Class XII examination is not a public exam, the applicant must have cleared at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination beforehand”.
To satisfy the eligibility criteria for the HSEE exam, applicants should have obtained at least 60% aggregate score in the qualifying exam if they are from the General or OBC section. On the other hand, SC, ST and PwD category applicants meet HSEE 2019 qualification criteria if they have got a minimum 55% marks in aggregate in the particular exam.
“Where only report grades are considered in the mark sheet, the applicant should get a certificate from the Board defining equivalent marks, and present it at the time of joining. In the event the applicant does not present such a certificate, the judgment of the HSEE admission committee concerning his/her eligibility shall be ultimate”, notifies the official website of IIT HSEE.
HSEE 2020: Admission Process
Step 1: Enrollment
To complete the HSEE 2020 application, applicants will have to sign up on the official website of the test and click on “Apply Online” from the menu and follow the directions given on the site. The candidate has to enter all the information as per the guidance. The site will prompt to keep the data on the system when required. Once the applicant has registered the details such as name, email-ID and mobile number, the candidate will get a verification mail, which consists of the HSEE 2020 enrollment number and password.
Step 2: Complete the HSEE Application Form
Once the applicant has successfully listed him/herself, the candidate can choose the HSEE application form. The application method for IIT HSEE began from December 11, 2019 onwards. The application fee requires to be cleared through Credit Card/Debit Card/Net Banking/ Indian Bank challan.
Step 3: Receive HSEE Admit card
Once the candidate has successfully filled and submitted the HSEE application form, the candidate will have to download their particular HSEE admit card, which will be available online on the authentic website of HSEE which will be published two weeks before the exam. Applicants are informed that the university will not post the HSEE admit card via post or courier and can only get the admit card from the mentioned website.
Step 4: Appear for IIT HSEE 2020
The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (HSEE) is of 180 minutes duration and divided into two parts. HSEE Part I comprises objective type questions and Part II of IIT HSEE comprises a subjective question. Applicants are recommended to go through the exam pattern, evaluating scheme and syllabus of HSEE.
Step 5: Check HSEE Result
The HSEE 2020 results will be published on the official website of the exam page. A common rank list is published with names of applicants who have obtained at least 50% marks in the exam. Aside from this, separate HSEE merit lists are issued for all categories.
Step 6: Counselling
After the declaration of the HSEE 2020 results, the counselling and admission process will begin. The college will publish a merit list after the results have been published, where applicants who satisfy the qualifying cutoff scores, will be invited for counselling in Integrated MA course offered by IIT Madras.

The approved website informs: “A candidate has to give two alternatives for the city centre. If an adequate number of candidates is not possible at any of the above-listed cities, the same may be withdrawn, and the applicants will be designated a centre of the second option in the other town”.
Also, the university notifies that “application from a candidate for a change of city/town assigned to him/her will NOT be considered under any circumstances”.
