Every year Higher education consultancy QS (Quacquarelli Symonds)ranks and releases a list of top 1000 universities across the globe. These rankings are useful for higher education aspirants as a reference in order to choose the best university. Institutes across the globe are evaluated on six metrics. These include international faculty ratio, international student ratio, citations per faculty, employer reputation, academic reputation and Faculty/Student Ratio.
Indian Institutes in the QS World University Rankings
This year a total of 21 Indian institutes were included as compared to last year, where 24 institutes were ranked in the top 1000.
IITs Dominate the list amongst Indian universities. And only three Indian institutes made it to the top two hundred list.Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), the top Indian Institute was ranked at 172nd position, Indian institute of sciences (IISc) at 185th position and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) at 193rd.
Rank wise the performance of Indian institutes have gone down.Last year, IIT Bombay was ranked 152nd and this year it slipped down by 20 ranks. IISc was down by one position and IIT Delhi dropped from 182 to 193.
If you look at the top 500. Apart from IITB, IISc and IITD, a total of 5 other universities were included.IIT Madras (IITM) was ranked at 275th rank, IIT Kharagpur (IIT KGP) at 314th rank, IIT Kanpur (IITK) at 350th rank, IIT Roorkee (IITR) at 383rd rank and IIT Guwahati (IITG) at 470th rank.
Other Indian Universities in the List
- University of Delhi (DU) in 501-510 bracket.
- IIT Hyderabad in the 600- 650 bracket.
- P. Jindal Global University, University of Hyderabad, Savitribai Phule Pune University and Jadavpur University are in the 651-700 bracket.
- Jamia Millia Islamia and Manipal academy of higher education are in the 751-800 bracket.
- Aligarh Muslim University, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Anna University, Banaras Hindu University, and the University of Calcutta made it to the 801-1000 bracket.
In the QS World University Rankings 2020, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, University of Mumbai and Vellore Institute of Technology had also made the list.
Foreign universities in the QS World University Rankings
Five Universities from the United States of America, four from the United Kingdom and one university from Switzerland were ranked in the top 10, in the QS World University Rankings 2021.
MIT- Massachusetts Institute for Technology in the United States dominated the list again for the 9th consecutive time, holding the first rank. Other American universities Stanford University, Harvard University, and California Institute of Technology were ranked at 2nd, 3rd, and 4th position respectively.
Oxford University from the United Kingdom was ranked 5th and ETZ Zurich - swiss federal institute of technology-based in Switzerland got the 6th rank.
University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), Imperial College London (United Kingdom), University of Chicago (United States) and UCL (United Kingdom) secured 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th rank respectively.
